Welcome to the CAISSA Minute, where we’re going to talk about the global equity slump and why diversification really does matter.
Not all investments responded to September’s market pressures in the same way. Smaller U.S. companies and developed international stocks experienced larger declines, while emerging markets held up pretty nicely. Commodities were the only major asset class to post a positive return in Q3.
These differences highlight an important point. Market leadership changes and sometimes really quickly. Smaller businesses can be much more vulnerable to higher borrowing costs, and commodities respond to forces such as energy prices and supply conditions. So for investors, the lesson is not to chase whichever market performed best last month.
It is to build a portfolio that doesn’t depend on any single region, company-sized source of return. So at CAISSA, we want to see diversification as a practical way to manage uncertainty while staying aligned with all of the long-term objectives of each one of our clients.
Thanks for taking a minute with CAISSA.
